What an Articulated Forklift Truck Does Differently

An articulated forklift truck has a front section that pivots, so the mast and forks swing up to around 180° while the body stays still in the aisle. That one capability changes how a warehouse is laid out: instead of leaving 3.5 to 4 metres for a counterbalance truck to turn, you can run racking with aisles as narrow as roughly 1.6 to 1.8 metres and still pick and put away full pallets. In many buildings that means 30–50% more pallet positions in the same footprint, without moving a wall.

Because the truck articulates rather than relying on a long wheelbase, one articulated forklift can do the work that usually needs two machines — it unloads a lorry on the yard, drives straight indoors, and stores the pallet in a very narrow aisle. A reach truck is a capable narrow-aisle machine, but it needs wider aisles than an articulated truck and cannot safely load or unload vehicles outdoors.
