Electric forklifts now do most of the indoor lifting in UAE warehouses, and for a clear reason: no exhaust, much lower running cost, and quiet enough for food, pharmaceutical and retail sites. But “electric forklift” covers a wide range of machines, and the right one depends on your loads, your racking and how hard the truck will work. This guide walks through the decisions that matter before you buy.
1. Match the capacity to your heaviest load
Start with the heaviest pallet the truck will lift, then add a margin — never size a forklift to its exact maximum. Most UAE warehouse work is handled by electric forklifts from about 1 tonne upwards, with the ARAS range spanning 1 to 3 tonnes. Remember that rated capacity drops as you lift higher or fit attachments, so a truck rated at 2.5 tonnes at floor level may carry less at full mast height. If you are unsure, our guide to choosing the right forklift capacity goes deeper, and you can see live models on the ARAS electric forklift page.
2. Choose the right battery: lithium-ion or lead-acid
This is the decision that most affects daily running. Lead-acid is cheaper to buy and still common for single-shift operations. Lithium-ion costs more upfront but charges far faster, tops up safely during breaks, needs no watering or battery swaps, and holds its performance to the end of the shift — which is why multi-shift operations increasingly choose it. If you run two or three shifts, the lithium maths usually works out. We cover the trade-off in detail in lithium-ion vs lead-acid forklift batteries. ARAS supplies both, including the Soosung SBF-A and lithium SBF-Li models.
3. Lift height, mast and aisle width
Measure your top beam height and the narrowest aisle the truck must work in. A standard counterbalance electric forklift is flexible and works indoors and out, but it needs wide aisles to turn. If you are storing in high racking or tight aisles, a counterbalance truck may not be the most efficient choice. For high-bay storage in narrow aisles, an electric reach truck lifts higher in much less space; for the tightest aisles of all, an articulated forklift can work where nothing else fits. Matching the truck type to your aisle is often where the biggest savings come from.
4. Tyres, environment and the UAE heat
Most indoor electric forklifts run on cushion or solid tyres on smooth concrete. If the truck also works on rougher yard surfaces, you will want pneumatic tyres and to check ground clearance. Heat and dust are the real local test: modern electric forklifts are sealed and rated for UAE conditions, but the battery needs a sensible, ventilated charging area and the truck should be serviced on schedule. Ask your supplier how the battery and electronics are protected against heat.
5. Total cost of ownership, not just the sticker price
An electric forklift can cost more to buy than an equivalent diesel forklift, but it usually wins over its working life: no fuel, fewer moving parts, and lower servicing give a lower cost per hour. Diesel still earns its place for heavy, continuous outdoor work, so the honest answer depends on where the truck spends its day. For mostly-indoor operations, electric is normally the lower lifetime cost. If you would rather not buy outright, weigh the options in our leasing vs buying guide.
6. Buying and servicing in the UAE
Whatever you choose, after-sales support matters more than the brochure. Check that spare parts are held locally and that service can reach your site quickly across the emirates. ARAS Developments FZE supplies, delivers and services electric forklifts from its base in Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA), Dubai, to all seven emirates. You can browse electric forklift models, see what is available for sale, or contact the team for pricing, stock and an on-site demonstration.
Frequently Asked Questions
What capacity electric forklift do I need?
Size to your heaviest load plus a safety margin, and remember capacity falls as you lift higher or add attachments. Most UAE warehouse duty is covered from about 1 tonne up; tell us your heaviest pallet and mast height and we will confirm the model.
Should I choose a lithium-ion or lead-acid battery?
Lead-acid suits single-shift work at a lower upfront cost. Lithium-ion costs more to buy but charges faster, opportunity-charges during breaks and needs no watering, so it usually pays off for two- or three-shift operations.
Can electric forklifts work outdoors in the UAE?
Yes, for yard work and light outdoor duty on sound surfaces, with the right tyres. For continuous heavy outdoor or rough-ground work a diesel forklift is still the better fit. We can advise based on your site.
Is an electric forklift cheaper than a diesel forklift?
To buy, often not; to run, usually yes for indoor and mixed duty. No fuel, fewer moving parts and lower servicing give a lower cost per hour over the life of the truck.
